Day 184

“May the LORD repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”

After pointing out Ruth’s good heart, Boaz turns the focus back to God, calling down blessings on Ruth to repay her for the kindness she showed to her mother-in-law. An ideal partner will be kind, protective in a healthy way, and will focus on our heart even more than our beauty. But he’ll also make sure that God is at the center of his life and his thoughts.

Second Corinthians 6:14 contains a warning about being “yoked” to someone who doesn’t believe in Jesus (think of two oxen plowing together with one yoke connecting them). While we shouldn’t take this as a blanket commandment to stay away from unbelievers, we should consider this warning when choosing the person with whom we’ll be spending the rest of our lives. Does he share your values? Does he believe in God? Does he make God a priority in his life? These are important questions to ask ourselves.

It’s okay to ask God for discernment in this area. In fact, he wants us to! When only God can see a person’s heart, we want to be careful in our judgments.
